Finding South using the Moon.

A very simple method for finding South in the Northern Hemisphere is to Imagine a line that connects the horns of a crescent moon, and then extend this line down to the horizon. This will give an approximate indication of south. It works best when the moon is high in the sky and not too near the horizon, when significant errors are possible.

This works because, the moon (if not a new moon) must be roughly East or West of the Sun. And the bright side of the moon is facing the sun. Turning it into a compass because 90 degrees of East or West, is South.
